A new study has linked the drug Nexium to a link to heart attacks and other serious health problems.
The research, conducted at the University of Michigan, looked at patients who had taken the drug in the past year. They were also given a placebo.
The study included 19,849 patients, aged 40 to 80, who had taken a different form of the drug. The researchers measured the risk of heart attacks in the group of patients, using a simple randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study.
They found that the patients who took the drug had a 14% increase in their risk of developing heart attacks compared to those who took the placebo. But there were no differences between the groups in the number of heart attacks.
The findings were published on Jan. 9 inJAMA Internal Medicine.
Dr. Michael M. DeAngelis, M. D., the study’s lead author, said: “This is the first study to investigate the connection between heart attacks and heart disease, which is an important public health issue. This study highlights the need for further research on this topic.”
The study was published in theJournal of the American Medical Association.
The study involved a small sample of patients, which was then followed up for three years. It was not designed to compare heart disease risk with other forms of the drug, such as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), or with other types of treatments.
The researchers looked at patients who had taken the drug and had no other health conditions, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or heart disease.
They found that patients who took Nexium had a 14% risk of developing heart attacks compared to those who took the placebo.
There was also an increased risk of heart attack among those who had taken a PPI, compared to those who took the placebo.
The researchers also looked at patients who had taken other forms of the drug, such as a proton pump inhibitor, such as omeprazole and esomeprazole, or who had not had any other medical conditions.
They found that patients who had taken the drug had a 14% increase in their risk of developing heart attacks.
The researchers concluded: “In patients who had taken a proton pump inhibitor for a long time, there was a risk of heart attack. However, this increased risk was not found among patients who had taken other forms of the drug.”
The researchers were not able to provide any additional information on the risk of heart attacks among the patients who took Nexium.
But they said: “These findings suggest that, at least in some populations, some risk factors may be associated with the development of heart disease.”
The study’s authors added: “In general, the association between heart disease and heart attacks was modest and did not appear to be clinically relevant.”
David E. J. Ricks, M. D., the study’s lead author, said: “Our results are particularly concerning because they are the first study to show that long-term use of an anti-diarrheal drug may increase the risk of developing heart disease.”
The researchers also looked at the link between Nexium and a number of other common health problems, including high blood pressure and heart failure.
“We found that patients who took the drug had a 14% increased risk of developing heart attacks compared to those who took the placebo,” Dr. D., a cardiologist at the Cleveland Clinic, said.
DeAngelis is a member of the American Heart Association. He is a co-author of a study on heart disease called the “Long-Term Impact of Nexium on Heart Disease”.
DeAngelis was not involved in the study.
